In His Image: Remembering Who You Are and Whose You Are

Good morning, and welcome to a new reflection.

Today, I found myself in Genesis 1:26, and I couldn’t move past it. The words lingered. They settled. They asked me questions I couldn’t ignore.

“And God said, Let Us—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—make mankind in Our image, after Our likeness…” (Amplified Classic)

That verse alone reminded me of two foundational truths we often forget:

who we are and whose we are.

And so I paused.

Do You Know Who You Are?

As I read, I found myself asking:

Abiola, do you really know who you are?

Do you know whose you are?

Do you understand the image and the likeness you carry?

God didn’t say, “Let me create man after the animals,” or “after the trees,” or “after the stars.” Scripture tells us that everything else was created after its kind. But humanity was different.

God said, “Let Us make man in Our image.”

That means we carry His attributes, His nature, His character.

It means there is something of God already living on the inside of us.

A Simple Analogy That Brought It Home

By God’s grace, I’m blessed with two children — a 14-year-old daughter and an 11-year-old son. Anyone who meets my daughter often says the same thing: “She looks exactly like her dad.” The facial resemblance is obvious.

But as her mother, I see deeper than appearance.

I see how she thinks.

How she responds.

How certain traits — some from her father, some from me — show up in her personality, her values, her approach to life.

She didn’t just inherit a face.

She inherited character.

And that’s when it clicked.

That’s exactly what Genesis 1:26 is telling us.

God didn’t just create us to look like Him in theory — He created us to reflect Him in character, in action, in authority.

Looking in the Mirror

This reflection brought me face to face with a very honest question:

When I look at my life, can God see Himself reflected?

In my character…

In how I speak…

In how I lead…

In how I work…

In how I love…

Am I walking in excellence?

Am I walking in love?

Am I conscious of the grace already placed within me?

Genesis goes on to say that God blessed mankind and gave them dominion — authority over everything living. That means authority isn’t something we beg for. It’s something we are meant to walk in, consciously and humbly.

Authority Begins With Identity

Here’s the part that struck me deeply:

You cannot walk in authority if you don’t understand identity.

If we don’t know God — the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit — then we won’t fully understand who we are. And when we don’t understand who we are, we live uncertain, hesitant, and reactive, rather than confident and anchored.

We end up winging life.

But when we know our Father, we begin to recognize ourselves.

A Prayer for This Season

As I step into this new year, my prayer has become very simple:

Lord, help me see what You have already deposited inside of me.

Help me live aware of who I am and whose I am.

Help me walk in the authority, love, and grace You’ve given — not striving, not forcing, but aligned.

And that’s my prayer for you too.

May God open the eyes of our understanding.

May we know who we are.

May we know whose we are.

And may we live intentionally, reflecting the image of the One who created us.

Kindly share any thoughts that resonates with you.

God bless you.

Have a beautiful day.
